Syngenta is now seeking over 1000 farmers to each establish at least one hectare of Operation Bumblebee habitat. Operation Bumblebee aims to work with 1000 farmers to each establish at least one hectare of new habitat using the Operation Bumblebee seed mix.
Government biodiversity experts calculate one thousand hectares of the Pollen & Nectar seed mix will make a ‘significant and sustainable difference to bumblebee populations’ across over one million hectares of UK arable cropping.
Farmers joining Operation Bumblebee will receive commitment from Syngenta to help successfully establish and manage the new habitat, including:
- Training at a Syngenta Centre for Environmental Excellence
- Operation Bumblebee Guide Pack
- Topical in-season updates
- Phone support
- Web site member’s information
- Field ID guide
- Meetings at key times through the season
- Training video – end of ‘06
In return for the Operation Bumblebee training and support activity, farmers must commit to:
- Establish and manage at least one hectare of Operation Bumblebee habitat
- Buy the seed (approx £100/ha)
- Record site and management details
Farms will be selected to join Operation Bumblebee to create a patchwork of premium habitats in the most vulnerable areas for arable bumblebee species.
